Meet Segun, a Dental Surgeon, with about 5 years of experience working as a medical practitioner in Lagos. Despite not having lost his job before, Segun acknowledges the challenge that job loss can bring to young professionals climbing the ladder and on their finances, especially.

Let’s dive into our conversation.

Tell us more about yourself

I am a Dental Surgeon with about five years of practice and a graduate of the University of Lagos. I completed my housemanship at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital before moving to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for my service year.

After NYSC, I moved to Private Practice at a Dental Clinic where I worked as the Operating Dental Surgeon and managed the business for 2 years. After 2 years of managing the Dental services business at the private clinic, I made a career switch to the non-clinical aspect of healthcare due to my passion for Health Financing, Management, and Health Policy.

I currently work as the Special Programme Officer of the Lagos State Health Management Agency, where I help develop, maintain, and innovate programs and initiatives that will improve health financing and make them sustainable.

Hmmm, interesting career progression so far. You’re really living the dream. Have you ever been fired or made redundant from a job?

No, I have not. Thankfully.

That’s dope. What’s your biggest fear about being laid off from work?

Hmmm…my biggest fear will be sustaining my top management role or breaking into an equal level in a bigger organization. I realise that this may be harder than getting in from a lower level.

Understandably. What motivated you to get Income Protection on Casava?

I think that this is a good strategy for securing a very important aspect of my survival — my income. It is also a first of its kind in this country, and with the volatility of the economy, it is an obvious necessity.

What’s Income Protection Insurance to you or what does it do for you?

For me, it is a safeguard against unexpected occurrences with regards to my job which is my source of income.

What’s one thing you like about Casava?

I like that the company seeks to get constant feedback on the MVP by engaging with customers regularly.

Will you willingly encourage your friends or colleagues to get income protection?

For sure! I have recommended Casava to my friends and colleagues already and I will continue to do it as I think the product idea is great and quite necessary.

If you could pick up a new skill in an instant, what would it be?

I’d pick up a high-income skill like Health Actuary.
